He is a direct decendent of Sidi Ahmed Al Tijany, and after having perfected through memorization and understanding all teachings of Islam (including all 14 Quranic readings, all Hadith ways and teachings, and Shari'a Law) by the age of 17, he is considered one of the youngest to ever achieve this marvelous accomplishment, as well as opening his Zawya of Imbaba by age 20. An Imam of highest nobility, respect, and acclaim, he now has hundreds of disciples all over the world.

CHILDHOOD AND LEARNING

He was born June 12, 1958 in Cairo, in the district of Said Zaynab, within a family of descendants of the Prophet Muhammad through the lineage of Imam Hasan ibn Ali. His father, Imam Mahmud al-Hasani, was a scholar and teacher atal-Azhar University, and taught him the basics of Islamic knowledge, including the Quran and related sciences. Then at aged 15, he performed his Hajj for the first time, and at 17, he obtained several diplomas and awards in the areas of Tajwid,Tafsir, Hadith and Maliki Fiqh, and wrote several epistles on these subjects. At 18 years old, he saw the Prophet in a dream who ordered him to join the Tijani Tariqa, then again at the age of 20, to build a Zawiyya that would enable everyone to learn and practice Islam peacefully. The latter is built in the district of Imbaba at Cairo, and has an open access library for which Shaykh Salah udDin has striven to identify the great classics of literature, in order to share them with anyone who wishes, making a point that Muslim(s) are reclaiming the knowledge of their religion. It was officially opened on 1st Muharram 1400. Over the years, he became master of Sunni jurisprudence in the Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanafi and Hanbali Madhabs as well as mastering the legal opinions of the defunct Madhab, like Thawri, Awza'i and Zahiri. Eventually, becoming a Mujtahid, able to issue fatwa directly from Quran and Sunnah.

HIS ACHIEVEMENTS

Peerless in the science of ḥadīth, in all its various specializations, he has mastery over what is authentic (Ṣaḥīḥ) of it from what is weak and deficient. The eminent scholars among his contemporaries have bowed before him due to the stature of his chain of transmission and his sagacity in his endeavors. For he is the seal of the ḥuffāẓ in memorizing ḥadīth, the cavalier of words and meanings, narrating with the highest chains of transmission from the great ḥadīth masters of his age. As his eminence states: “ Praise be to Allah, for by his munificence, benevolence and grace upon us, we are able to narrate from a truly great number from among the giants of ḥadīth, the ḥuffāz, the scholars, and the righteous servants of this age, as I have recorded in my book, The Fulfillment of Aspirations in the Chains of Transmission of al-Sharīf Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn alTijānī. However, due to the limitations of space and the fear of prolonging matters, I have selected four among them, and they are Masters of scholarship in this world, as the pivots of narrations in the Science of Ḥadīth in this period:

First: from Abī al-Kamāl, Muḥaddith of this world: the Knower of Allah Sayyidī Muḥammad al-ʿḤāfiẓ al-Tijānī al-Maṣrī, may Allah be pleased with him.

Second: from the reliance of the two Sacred Mosques: Sheikh Abī al-Fayḍ Muḥammad Yāsīn b. Muḥammad ʿĪsā al-Fādānī al-Makkī, may Allah be pleased with him.

Third: from the noble and highborn erudite scholar of al-Maghrib (Morocco and N. West Africa), and the pride of the Maghrib over the Eastern lands of al-Mashriq: Sayyidī Abī al-ʿAlāʾ Idrīss b. al-ʿĀbid al-ʿIrāqī, may Allah be pleased with him.

Fourth: from the erudite scholar of al-Maghrib: Sheikh ʿAbd Allah b. Ṣiddīq alGhumārī, may Allah be pleased with him.

May Allah have mercy over all of them, and reward them handsomely on our behalf.

9. Al-Sheikh Yusuf al-Nabhānī.
10. Al-Sheikh Badr al-Dīn al-Ḥasanī al-Dimashqī.

And we narrate the Ṣaḥīḥ of Imam Bukhārī, with the highest/shortest chain of transmission on earth, which is as follows:
1. From: Sayyidī Muḥammad al-Ḥafiẓ al-Tijānī, Sheikh al-Fādānī, and Sheikh alʿIrāqī;
2. these three narrate it from: Sheikh Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Ḥayy b. ʿAbd al-Kabīr alḤasanī al-Katānī
3. who narrates it from: al-Muʿammar Sheikh Aḥmad b. Manlā Ṣāliḥ al-Suwaydī alBaghdādī al-Shāfiʿī
4. who narrates it from: the rarity of the age, al-Ḥafiẓ Muḥammad Murtaḍā alZubaydī al-Ḥasanī
5. who narrates it from: al-Muʿammar Muḥammad b. Sinnat al-Falānī al-Mālikī
6. who narrates it from: Sheikh Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. al-ʿAjil al-Yamanī
7. who narrates it from: al-Quṭb al-Naharānī
8. who narrates it from: Sheikh Aḥmad b. Abī al-Futūḥ al-Ṭāwūsī
9. who narrates it from: al-Muʿammar Bābā Yusuf al-Harawī
10. who narrates it from: Abī ʿAbd Allah Muḥammad b. Shādh Bakht al-Fārisī alFarghānī
11. who narrates it from: Yaḥyā b. Khatlān al-Shāhānī
12. who narrates it from: Muḥammad b. Yusuf al-Farbarī

who narrates it from the Ḥāfiẓ and Ḥujja: Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Bukhārī, may Allah be please with him; thus by the grace and favor of Allah, there are only twelve narrators between me and al-Bukhārī.

Based on this, there are only fifteen narrators between me and the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, in case of Bukhārī’s shortest narrations of consisting of three narrators; and this is the highest/shortest chain of transmission available, praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds .

All these names I have mentioned of the scholars of old, their chains are well-known and recognised, and they are connected (back to the Messenger, peace be upon him), as the scholars of ḥadīth have confirmed, and thus we shall not mention here for fear of prolonging matters.

The ‘Starting’ Hadīth (Ḥadīth al-Awwaliyya):

As for the ‘initial’ ḥadīth, we narrate it from many people, and we narrate here one of our chains, which is the shortest chain of transmission on earth:
1. We thus narrate it from our Sheikh Abī al-Kamāl Muḥaddith al-Dunya Muḥammad al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Tijānī, may Allah be pleased with him; it was the first he heard
2. from Sheikh Alfā Ḥāshim al-Madanī; it was the first he heard
3. from Sheikh Ṣāliḥ al-Falānī; it was the first he heard
4. from Sheikh Muḥammad b. Sinnat al-Falānī; it was the first he heard
5. from al-Sharīf al-Wūlātī; it was the first he heard
6. from al-Muʿammar Ibn Arkmāsh al-Ḥanafī; it was the first he heard
7. from the Prince of the Believers in the science of ḥadīth al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar alʿAsqalānī; it was the first he heard
8. from al-Ḥāfiẓ Abī al-Faḍl Zayn al-Dīn al-ʿIrāqī; it was the first he heard
9. from Abī al-Fatḥ Muḥammad al-Bikrī al-Ṣadr al-Maydūmī; it was the first he heard
10. from Abī al-Najīb ʿAbd al-Laṭīf b. ʿAbd al-Munʿim al-Ḥarrānī; it was the first he heard
11. from Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abī al-Faraj b. al-Jawzī; it was the first he heard
12. from Sheikh Abī Saʿīd Ismāʿīl b. Abī Ṣāliḥ al-Muʾadhin al-Nīsābūrī; it was the first he heard
13. from his father Abī Ṣāliḥ; it was the first he heard
14. from Abī Ṭāhir Muḥammad b. Maḥmash al-Ziyādī; it was the first he heard
15. from Abī Ḥamid Aḥmad b. Yaḥya b. Bilāl al-Bazzāz; it was the first he heard
16. from Sheikh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Bashar b. al-Ḥakam al-Nīsābūrī; it was the first he heard, and
17. he narrated it as: Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah narrated to us

At this juncture, the chain dropped the feature of its ‘initial’ mention; i.e. they stopped narrating it as “and it is the first . . .”
18. from Sheikh ʿAmr b. Dīnār, who
19. said: it was narrated to us from Abu Qābūs, the Mawlā of ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, who
20. said: it was narrated to us from ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, that the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “Those who are merciful will be granted mercy by the Most Merciful; be merciful to those on the earth, and the One in the Heaven will be merciful towards you.”

Thus, there are only 20 narrators between us and the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and this is the shortest chain on earth during this period concerning ḥadīth al-awwaliyya, so praise be to Allah for his favour and benevolence.

The ‘Blessed’ Chain

I mention here a chain through which we narrate most of the books of noble ḥadīth, seeking blessings from the mention of the great saint and the famous quṭb Sīdī Aḥmad alTījānī, may Allah be pleased with him and make him well-pleased, and may He be pleased with us through him. Through this chain, we narrate all the books of Sunna:
1. From: Sheikh Muḥammad al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Tījānī
2. who narrates it from: Sheikh Muḥammad al-Ṣādiq al-Riyāḥī al-Tūnisī
3. who narrates it from: Sheikh al-Ṭayyib al-Nayfar al-Tūnisī
4. who narrates it from: the Erudite Sheikh al-Māḥī al-Dārfūrī
5. who narrates it from our Sheikh al-Quṭb al-Rabbānī Our Master Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Ḥasanī al-Tijānī, may Allah be pleased with him
6. who narrates it from Sheikh Maḥmūd al-Kurdī al-ʿIrāqī
7. who narrates it from Sheikh al-Islām Sheikh Muḥammad b. Sālim al-Ḥanafī alMasrī
8. who narrates it from Sheikh Muḥammad ʿAbd Allah al-Saljamāsī
9. who narrates it from Sheikh al-Islām Sheikh ʿAbd Allah b. Sālim al-Baṣrī alMakkī
10. who narrates it from Muḥammad b. ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn al-Bābilī al-Maṣrī
11. who narrates it from Sheikh Abī al-Najā Sālim b. Muḥammad al-Sanhūdī
12. who narrates it from Khātimat al-Ḥuffāẓ al-Najm Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. ʿAlī al-Ghayṭī
13. who narrates it from Sheikh al-Islam Sheikh Abī Yaḥya Zakariyya b. Muḥammad al-Anṣārī
14. who narrates it from the Prince of the Believers in science of ḥadīth Ibn Ḥajar alʿAsqalānī al-Miṣrī.

As for the chains of transmission concerning the different invocations of dhikr, spiritual lights and secrets of the Tījānīyya Order, in addition to the chains for the ten multiply corroborated Qurʾānic recitations, these too are very short and many, and we have listed them all in our book The Fulfilment of Aspirations in the Chains of Transmission of alSharīf Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn al-Tījānī.

As for his knowledge in the Law (Fiqh):

he is the penetrating jurist, the scholar of the Umma, and pride of Imams. He has studied eleven schools of Islamic law (madhhabs) with traditional teaching licenses (ijāzas) and through connected chains of transmission, and we shall restrict ourselves to his chains of transmission of the four orthodox schools of law of the Sunni community (Ahl al-Sunna wal-Jamāʿa). He has studied:
- The School of Imām Mālik, may Allah be pleased with him, with the Sheikh of the school in the Hejaz, the most knowledgeable of those who have granted and received teaching ijāzas, the erudite jurist Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Mubārak, may Allah have mercy on him.
- The School of Imām al-Shāfiʿī, may Allah be pleased with him, with the experienced and profoundly knowledgeable scholar, the Sheikh of the school in the Syrian Levant, Sheikh ʿAbd al-Salām al-Nābilsī, during his stay in al-Iʿḥsāʾ in eastern region of Saudi Arabia.
- The School of Imām Aḥmad Ibn Ḥanbal, may Allah be pleased with him, with the eminent scholar and jurist Sheikh Abi Bakr al-Ḥanbalī, the Sheikh of the school in al-Iḥsāʾ.
- As for the School of al-Imām al-Akbar Abī Ḥanīfa al-Nuʿmān, may Allah be pleased with him, he studied with the venerable scholar and Sheikh, the renowned, noble, and highborn jurist Mawlānā Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Dahlawī al-Ṣaghīr, and this was during our Sheikh’s stay in al-Madina al-Munawwara, may the highest of peace and blessings be accorded to its Inhabitant, the Prophet Muḥammad.

As for the Qurʾānic Recitations:

He recited before the erudite scholar of his period, the distinct scholar of his age, the sun of Qurʾān reciters, the quṭb of recitation teachers, Sheikh Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Zayyāt. He recited before him the ten recitations from a widely circulated chain, and he received from him a teaching ijāza for ten great recitations.

He has also recited before the Sheikh of reciters in al-Azhar al-Sharīf, Sheikh Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Hamdānī, and he received from him a teaching ijāza for the ten great recitations as well.

He has received, may Allah be pleased with him, many chains of transmission with regards to the knowledge of ḥadīth, law, Qurʿānic exegesis (tafsīr), Qurʾānic recitations, and the musalsalāt, which he has compiled and organised in his book The Fulfilment of Aspirations in the Chains of Transmission of al-Sharīf Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn al-Tījānī.

His countenance, may Allah be pleased with him, is Ḥasanī, Muḥammadī, which radiates with the lights of his grandfather, the Prophet, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and it is white with a tinge of redness.

He had, may Allah be pleased with him, a regal stature, with an aura of venerability and dignity, a broad forehead, wide eyes, and a smiling mouth. He is of medium build, neither tall nor short, alluring in manner and appearance, and he was modest in his dress, appearance, his food and drink.

As he was also, may Allah be pleased with him, merciful but not weak, mild-mannered but not feeble, and strong but not violent; he was indeed moderate in all matters. He would listen more than he would speak, displaying excessive humility in his external an inner states, with a calm temperament and forbearing and generous spirit.

He was, may Allah be pleased with him, the most easy going, most sophisticated of people, and mild-mannered of people. None would look at him except that he would be received with a smile and affection in return; it is as if he were raised in the company of a Prophet.

When he is silent, he has an aura of venerability and dignity, and when he speaks, he is eloquent and clear, as if an angel is speaking through his tongue.

As for his students, may Allah be pleased with him:

they are far too many to mention, and each of them is at the forefront in his country in the sciences of the Sharīʿa and the knowledge of Truth. They would come seeking him from every land and country, and when they would enter his zāwiya, they would be embraced under the care of the Tījaniyya and the lights of the sacred presence (al-ḥaḍra al-qudsiyya). They would then return to their various countries with their bodies, while their spirits would remain attached to his presence at the zāwiya, held captive by its lights and splendour.

His noble birth, may Allah be pleased with him, was on the Thursday morning of the 25th of Dhul Qiʿdah, 1377 AH, corresponding to June 12th, 1958, in Cairo’s al-Sayyida Zaynab district, and he was reared in an atmosphere of knowledge and righteousness by his honorable and noble parents.

His paternal grandfathers, may Allah be pleased with him, were all jurists and scholars; His father was one of the eminent scholars of al-Azhar, who knew the Book of Allah, the Most Exalted, by memory and who knew its Law, its theory and substantive rulings. He was a man of great modesty before Allah, the Most Exalted, such that one would not distinguish his presence from his absence.

Allah had shown His munificence towards Sh. Salāḥ, for he was able to perform the Ḥajj at the Sacred Mosque, may Allah be pleased with him, and visit his Prophet, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, twice: once when he was 15 years of age and the second time when he was 18. When he reached 27 years of age, he married his distinguished, noble, highborn and virtuous wife, and he fathered with her the two bright moons Sayyidī Muḥammad and Sayyidī Ibrāhīm, in addition to his noble and highborn daughter Nadia, and he was, as the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: “The best of you is he who is best to his family, and I am the best among you towards my family.”

Allah has indeed enabled him to acquire knowledge, put it into practice, and to obtain teaching ijāzas and author many works on Islamic law, ḥadīth, and the Qurʾānic sciences, and thus by the young age of only 17 years, he was already able to teach, mentor, and benefiting others.

However, his noble spirit continued to desire the knowledge of Allah, the Most Exalted, and wayfaring in the spiritual path, and he continued to search and become spiritually realized until his grandfather, (the Messenger) may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded him to seek the tutelage of the honorable Sayyidī Aḥmad alTijānī, may Allah be pleased with him, at the age of 18. Thus he began building his blessed zāwiya when he was no more than 20 years of age, and this was under the express permission of our Master the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him; thus his eminence, may Allah be pleased with him, is distinguished by a determination that never fades, for whenever he is determined upon a matter he initiates it, and whatever he initiates, he completes, and so he endeavored to build and beautify it, until Allah, the Most Glorified and Exalted, perfected it for him in the best manner.

His Publications (May Allah be pleased with him and make him well-pleased, and may He be pleased with us through him)

As for his publications, may Allah be pleased with him, they are quite popular and numerous in our time, and the various authors and poets have sought after them to draw from their effusion, splendor, and the beauty of their style and articulation, the wealth of their terminology, and for their precision and ability to master the heart of every topic under consideration and to respond to it decisively. And if I were left alone, I would not cease to speak, and I would continue to extol his virtues and high achievements in whatever Allah, the Most Exalted, has willed. However, our noble reader will be gladdened with some of what we have presented to him from the effusion of our beloved Master and Sheikh, who shall always have precedence over us during this life and after death, Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn al-Tijānī al-Ḥasanī al-Ḥusaynī, whose proper due has not been extinguished in the recounting of his virtues.

The poets have sung his praises and description, and at their helm have been his eminence Dr. Ayman Amīn al-Jabrī, the voice of rhetoric and eloquence, the poet of the zāwiya, its speaker and spokesperson and the great teacher, the formidable poet Aḥmad Ismāʿīl, and the great poet of Egypt Dr. Ḥajjāj Saʿd ʿAbd al-Fattāḥ.

As for the mention of his noble station, may Allah be pleased with him and make him well-pleased, and may He be pleased with us through him, and his delving into the sciences of Truth, in addition to the mention of his saintly miracles, may Allah be pleased with him, despite their plentitude, he has most strictly forbidden focusing on all of this, and pointing to it, such that he would swear by Allah, the Most Great, and say: “By Allah we are the happiest of Allah’s creation through Allah alone, the Most Exalted, and praise be to Allah Lord of the Worlds.” And when he would be asked about his lineage, he would simply respond, “I am the son of Sheikh al-Tijānī, and I know nothing of my lineage beside him.”

And there many poems composed by the lovers of the zāwiya extolling the virtues of Sheikh Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn, may Allah be pleased with him and make him well-pleased, and they are all from his inspirations and the effusion of his lights, may Allah increase him with light, favor, grace, kindness, and generosity upon us and upon all the Muslims of the nation of the Beloved, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Amen . . . Amen.
